Russia is demanding that the U.S. withdraw its nuclear weapons from Europe and dismantle its infrastructure

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation has demanded that the United States completely withdraw its nuclear weapons from the European continent and dismantle all infrastructure intended for their deployment. Moscow views the presence of these arsenals in Europe as a direct threat to its own security. 

This was stated by Andrei Belousov, Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Russian diplomat justified this position by arguing that American nuclear weapons in Europe are capable of striking critical civilian and military targets on Russian territory and therefore effectively serve as strategic weapons. 

This statement came amid reports by the Financial Times that the U.S. and its European allies are considering the possibility of deploying aircraft capable of carrying nuclear warheads in NATO countries bordering Russia. According to journalists, these intentions are linked to the war in Ukraine and the Kremlin’s regular nuclear blackmail. In particular, the governments of Poland and Lithuania have previously publicly stated their desire to join NATO’s nuclear deterrent. At the same time, Belousov denied anyany analogy between the U.S. actions and the recent deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, claiming that Moscow’s move allegedly does not threaten Washington and does not violate strategic stability.

Lithuania has begun negotiations with the U.S. regarding the deployment of nuclear weapons.

The U.S. is negotiating the possible deployment of its nuclear weapons in several other European countries. According to sources familiar with the discussions, the talks involve American bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons.
