The SBU detained a deserter who, acting on orders from Russia, was planning a terrorist attack in downtown Mykolaiv

The Counterintelligence Directorate of the Security Service of Ukraine thwarted a terrorist attack in downtown Mykolaiv and detained a Russian agent who was preparing to blow up a vehicle belonging to a member of the Defense Forces. The agent turned out to be a mobilized soldier who had left his military unit without authorization.

According to the investigation, the suspect was caught red-handed while installing a homemade explosive device under the Ukrainian soldier’s vehicle.

The SBU noted that the suspect was recruited by Russian intelligence services after he left his military unit without authorization and began looking for work through Telegram channels. On the instructions of his handler, he conducted reconnaissance near the potential victim’s vehicle, after which he received the coordinates of a cache containing explosives.

In addition to preparing the terrorist attack, the agent carried out another task for Russia—registering Starlink satellite terminals for the needs of Russian intelligence services. According to the SBU, he registered one of the terminals in his own name and later attempted to involve his wife and ten drug addicts in the illegal registration; they agreed to provide their passport information in exchange for monetary compensation.

According to investigators, the occupiers planned to use these terminals to guide missile, artillery, and drone strikes against Ukrainian military positions in the southern sector.

During searches, a cell phone containing evidence of contact with a Russian handler was seized from the detainee. The illegally registered Starlink terminal was blocked.

The suspect was notified of charges of treason committed under martial law and attempted terrorism. The court ordered him to be held in pretrial detention without the right to bail. If found guilty, he faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

This was reported by the SBU Office in the Mykolaiv region.
