The body of a man was found in the Carpathian Mountains near the border with Romania

A border patrol discovered the body of an unidentified man in a remote mountainous area approximately 3.5 km from the state border while patrolling the Ukrainian-Romanian border section.

Emergency response and police personnel were called to the scene and are currently working to identify the deceased and determine the circumstances of his death

“Law enforcement officials are currently working to identify the deceased and determine the circumstances of his death,” the statement said.

It is noted that the remote mountainous area near the Ukrainian-Romanian border covers parts of southern Ivano-Frankivsk, western Chernivtsi, and eastern Zakarpattia regions, though the exact location where the body was found has not been specified.

The State Border Guard Service emphasized: “We urge citizens not to put themselves in danger and not to travel in hard-to-reach border areas. Mountainous terrain, especially in bad weather, poses a threat to life and health.”

The agency also noted that since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, more than 70 deaths of men have been recorded during attempts to illegally cross the border. The most recent such incident occurred in the Krasnoilsk area of Chernivtsi Oblast in mid-May.

This was reported by the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.

At least 39 Ukrainian citizens have died in the mountainous regions of Romania while attempting to illegally reach the territory of the European Union since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. To rescue those in distress due to difficult weather and terrain conditions, Romanian emergency services responded to nearly 400 calls. In total, approximately 32,000 Ukrainian men have illegally entered Romania.

Earlier, in the highlands of the Carpathians, Ukrainian border guards detained two residents of Zakarpattia who were attempting to illegally smuggle a man from the Kyiv region into Romania. The smugglers accompanied him only part of the way, after which he was supposed to continue on his own.

In the first three months of 2026, Ukrainian border guards exposed 80 criminal groups involved in the illegal smuggling of people across the state border and detained approximately 2,900 violators.
