Zelenskyy ordered stricter penalties for traffic violations
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has instructed officials to prepare a National Security and Defense Council meeting on the safety situation on Ukrainian roads.
The decision was made following yet another traffic accident in Kyiv, in which a car traveling at high speed collided with another vehicle, veered onto the sidewalk, and crashed into an outdoor dining area. Zelenskyy stated that the driver was someone who, in his opinion, should have had his driver’s license revoked long ago.
The president also mentioned citizens’ appeals regarding road safety, specifically a petition from the father of a 12-year-old boy who died in a traffic accident.
According to Zelenskyy, it is necessary to increase accountability for drivers who systematically violate traffic rules and endanger the lives of others.
Lawmakers, civil society organizations, and government agencies are expected to be involved in drafting the relevant amendments.

Earlier, a community head in the Donetsk region died in a traffic accident.
As a reminder, the Pryluky City and District Court in Chernihiv Oblast sentenced a former police officer to eight years in prison for a fatal traffic accident that resulted in the death of a six-year-old child.
In Lviv Oblast, a 68-year-old driver of a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, who was under the influence of alcohol, fatally struck a Ukrainian Armed Forces servicemember. This was reported by the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
