The Russians struck a religious site in the Dnipropetrovsk region
In the frontline town of Mezhova in the Dnipropetrovsk region, a Russian drone likely struck the Holy Dormition Church. Following the strike, a fire engulfed the building, and thick black smoke rose above the town.
The church, which has long been one of Mezhova’s landmarks, has suffered from Russian attacks before. It had previously sustained damage during shelling.
The fire was reported by the local publication "Mezhivsky Meridian," which also published a video from the scene. The footage shows thick smoke rising above the Holy Dormition Church. According to preliminary data, the fire was caused by a Russian drone strike.

“Today, thick black smoke rose over the frontline town of Mezhova. Flames engulfed the Holy Assumption Church,” the publication reported. No official information on the extent of the damage had been released at the time of publication.
Mezhova Under Constant Attack
Local residents have long lived under the threat of Russian attacks. Mezhova is located about ten kilometers from the front line. Because of this, the community is regularly targeted by drones and other weapons.

According to local journalists, the attack on the church was just one of many incidents during another day of shelling. Recently, Russian troops have been increasingly targeting settlements near the front line, particularly civilian infrastructure and non-military facilities.
A church with nearly two centuries of history
The history of the Holy Dormition Church dates back to 1830. The first church was built in honor of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God. However, in 1972, the church was completely destroyed. In the late 1990s, the local community began construction of a new church.

After several years of work, on September 7, 2002, the church was consecrated and opened to the faithful. Since then, it has become one of the most famous places in Mezhova and an important part of community life.
Years of Restoration
Just a few years ago, the church underwent a major renovation. The interior was repaired, the iconostasis was restored, and the decor was refurbished.

For many residents of Mezhova, it was not just a church, but a place where important life events took place—baptisms, weddings, and festive services. That is why the news of yet another act of vandalism against the church was painful for many residents of the village.
This is not the first blow to the shrine
The Holy Dormition Church had previously come under Russian shelling. In particular, on November 19, 2025, the building sustained serious damage. At that time, the central dome, part of the church’s structure, and church furnishings were damaged.
Afterward, the community continued to restore the shrine. Now the church has come under attack again. Details regarding the consequences of the attack are currently being clarified. This was reported by the publication Mezhivsky Meridian.
