Hunger is increasingly being used as a weapon of war — The Guardian

Famine is increasingly being used as a weapon of war, and food infrastructure is increasingly becoming a target of attacks in conflict zones.

This is reported by The Guardian.

According to a new analysis, more than 21,000 incidents related to attacks on food supply systems have been recorded worldwide since 2018.

Specifically, this includes over 1,200 attacks on markets where civilians buy food, 863 incidents of strikes on food distribution systems, and nearly 2,000 attacks on agricultural land.

The highest number of such incidents was recorded in the occupied Palestinian territories, Yemen, and Sudan. Researchers also point to repeated attacks on food facilities in Syria, Mali, Lebanon, and Haiti.

The report emphasizes that armed conflicts remain the leading cause of hunger worldwide, and an increasing number of civilians are being killed or injured while attempting to access humanitarian aid.

The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz threatens the world with a massive humanitarian catastrophe and starvation for 45 million people due to the halt in fertilizer supplies. The international community has only a few weeks to unblock the route to save future harvests in African and Asian countries.

Hundreds of ships and thousands of sailors remain stranded in the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz, and food supplies on board are running out quickly. Despite a temporary ceasefire, traffic through this key waterway is moving slowly, and assistance for the sailors is virtually nonexistent.
