Poland is once again not involved in key negotiations regarding Ukraine – TVP World

Poland has once again found itself excluded from key European consultations on Ukraine, despite its status as one of Kyiv’s main allies. Warsaw traditionally plays an important role in supporting Ukraine, but does not always participate in decisive negotiations at the EU level.

Zelenskyy met with the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany in London—but Poland was not at the table. TVP World Editor-in-Chief Michał Broniatowski called this part of a deeper problem in relations between Warsaw and Kyiv.

The scandal surrounding the UPA is just one factor. President Zelensky signed a decree granting a Ukrainian military unit the honorary title “Heroes of the UPA.” The UPA—the Ukrainian Insurgent Army—waged an armed struggle against Soviet occupation during World War II. In Ukraine, it is seen as a symbol of resistance; in Poland, primarily because of the mass killings of the Polish civilian population in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia.

In response, Polish President Karol Nawrocki proposed considering stripping Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle—Poland’s highest state award. Prime Minister Donald Tusk took a different stance: he called on both presidents to speak directly and cautioned that “cooperation serves both our nations, while conflict serves Moscow’s interests.”

Broniatowski identified a deeper reason for Poland’s detachment: the disagreements between President Nawrocki and Prime Minister Tusk are causing allies to doubt what Warsaw’s foreign policy line actually is. This is precisely what explains Poland’s absence from the negotiating table.

At the same time, Broniatowski is convinced that Poland cannot be ignored indefinitely. “We cannot be sidelined because of our geography,” he emphasized, referring to the country’s key role in logistics and support for Ukraine.

As a reminder, the U.S. is set to provide Poland with a $2 billion loan to purchase weapons: F-35 fighter jets, Patriot air defense missile systems, and Abrams tanks.

Earlier, Poland signed an agreement with the U.S. for the delivery of 96 AH-64E Apache Guardian attack helicopters, along with a logistics and training package, for a total of $10 billion.
