In Russia, spouses will be able to divide in-game skins in the event of a divorce
In Russia, gaming accounts, rare skins, and digital items from popular online games may be taken into account when dividing marital property during a divorce.
If a gaming account was actively developed during the marriage, and joint family funds were spent on purchasing skins, in-game items, or leveling up a character, such assets may be taken into account during the division of property.
In Russia, a spouse may be entitled to claim not necessarily the account itself, but monetary compensation for its value.
Modern digital assets often cost thousands of dollars. This is especially true for popular games, such as Counter-Strike 2, where some rare knives, gloves, and skins sell for significant sums.
That is why the court may take into account:
- the value of the gaming account;
- rare skins and items;
- leveled-up characters;
- other digital assets acquired during the marriage.
Thus, expensive digital collections are no longer just a hobby. In certain cases, they can be considered property with market value.
So the playful advice from gamers to “put the knives in Mom’s name” is unlikely to be a universal way to avoid property claims if it is proven that the assets were purchased with joint family funds.
This is according to lawyers, who note that courts are increasingly paying attention to the value of digital assets.
As a reminder, the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM) previously stopped publishing its “open” rating of trust in Putin after his approval rating dropped to its lowest level since the start of the full-scale war against Ukraine.
In the Russian Federation, access to humanitarian and social education is being significantly curtailed, while benefits for participants in the war against Ukraine are being expanded.
