Flexibility and control in programmatic advertising — Cyprus Mail

The Cypriot publication Cyprus Mail examined how advertisers can use different programmatic buying channels without duplicating costs or losing control over performance measurement. New platforms, sources of advertising inventory, and deal types can expand campaign reach, but they also complicate reporting, optimization, and team workflows.

The number of tools should not be an end in itself, the publication notes. Additional platforms should be connected only when they solve a specific campaign task: provide access to unique inventory, a required format, a new audience, or premium advertising placements.

When one buying channel is enough

If a campaign has narrow requirements for formats and publishers, a single DSP platform can provide sufficient reach, frequency control, and a unified reporting structure. Connecting another system in this case may only duplicate already available inventory and increase the amount of work related to setup, data analysis, and technical support.

A consolidated approach also makes it easier to control spending pace and the frequency of advertising contacts. Each platform uses its own identifiers and impression-capping logic, so a user who has already seen an ad in one system may not be accounted for in another.

Benefits and risks of multiple platforms

Several buying paths may be justified when they do not compete for the same impressions. For example, one platform may provide broad reach, another premium video placements, and another access to specialized inventory, including streaming video, audio, or gaming formats. Private marketplaces can also provide access to selected publishers and more predictable placements, although they usually have a higher cost and smaller scale than open auctions.

At the same time, overlap among supply paths can lead to a situation in which different systems participate in bidding for the same ad impression. This can increase the purchase price and raise intermediary costs. The publication advises evaluating not only CPM, but also supply-chain transparency, fraud risks, ad viewability, brand safety, and the share of the budget that actually goes toward real, viewable, and verified impressions.

Unified measurement rules

Working with multiple platforms requires a common measurement methodology: identical rules for counting impressions, reach, frequency, conversions, spending, and attribution. Different systems may define these metrics differently, so directly comparing their reports without aligning the methodology may be misleading. Each buying channel should be regularly assessed based on its incremental value and the operational costs of supporting it, Cyprus Mail emphasizes.
