Germany is bolstering Ukraine's air defense capabilities and providing funding for drones

Germany has announced a new aid package for Ukraine: missiles for the Patriot system, IRIS-T systems, and 300 million euros for long-range drones. This was announced by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius at the start of a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, comprising defense ministers from NATO member states. The support is intended to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense and its ability to strike targets behind enemy lines.

According to him, Berlin will provide Ukraine with several hundred guided missiles for the Patriot system. They will be part of an initiative to strengthen air defense in the long term. “We are increasing our contribution to strengthening Ukraine’s air defense,” Pistorius said.

In addition, Germany will provide additional launchers for the IRIS-T system. The exact number has not been specified, but the aim is to expand the capabilities already provided. A separate focus is the development of long-range strikes. Germany plans to invest in Ukrainian drones. “We will also provide an additional 300 million euros to support the procurement of Ukrainian-made long-range drones,” the minister stated.

The funds will be allocated, in particular, through joint defense projects between Ukraine and Germany. This involves the development of medium- and long-range drone production.

Pistorius emphasized that such assistance directly impacts the situation on the front lines. According to him, Ukraine managed to hold its ground after a difficult winter, despite Russia’s massive attacks on the energy sector. “Ukraine is emerging from this winter stronger than before,” he noted.

The minister also highlighted the effectiveness of the Ukrainian military and technological advancements. “These successes are the result of the professionalism and bravery of Ukrainian troops, as well as innovation,” he said.

Berlin emphasizes that support for Ukraine will remain steadfast. According to Pistorius, the country will be able to withstand new attacks in the spring and summer precisely thanks to the help of its partners. “Ukraine will be able to sustain its defensive struggle only with our joint support,” he concluded.

As a reminder, the 34th “Ramstein” meeting on support for Ukraine has begun in Berlin.

Additionally, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hagset will once again not attend the meeting of the Ramstein Contact Group on Ukraine’s Defense, instead sending his deputy.

Additionally, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will join the meeting of the Ramstein Contact Group on Ukraine’s Defense.
