OpenAI is transforming ChatGPT into a multifunctional platform and AI agent
OpenAI is preparing for a major overhaul of its flagship product, ChatGPT, which is set to be the most radical update to the service since its launch in late 2022. Users will be able to see the first stages of the platform’s global overhaul on the web version of the site and in mobile apps in the coming weeks.
The developers’ main goal is to transform the standard chatbot into a so-called “super app” that will bring together disparate AI tools within a single interface.
The main focus of the upcoming update is shifting from simple conversation to the creation of autonomous AI agents. These agents will be able to perform complex, multifaceted tasks in the background, automatically interacting with external digital services and partner programs, including Booking.com and Canva. Internally, the company describes this new direction as a shift away from the classic chat format, which has run its course, toward systems capable of independently handling users’ routine tasks—from travel planning to managing work calendars.
A key component of the new ecosystem will be the deep integration of the Codex tool, designed to automate software coding and analytics processes. OpenAI’s leadership has decided to merge the ChatGPT and Codex development teams under a single leadership structure to make professional tools accessible to a broader audience. This shift in strategy is driven by fierce competition with Anthropic and OpenAI’s preparations for a public IPO, where the key criterion for success is attracting profitable corporate clients in the business sector, who currently account for about 40% of the company’s total revenue.
