Sweden will purchase up to 20 Gripen fighter jets for Ukraine and transfer an additional 16 aircraft
The Swedish government has approved the purchase of up to 20 Gripen E/F fighter jets for Ukraine under the EU’s Ukraine Support Loan financial assistance mechanism. In addition, Stockholm plans to transfer another 16 Gripen C/D fighter jets to Ukraine as part of bilateral military aid.
This was announced by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Uppsala Air Base.
The purchase of new Gripen E/F aircraft will be financed through the European Union’s Ukraine Support Loan mechanism. These are modern versions of Swedish fighter jets, which are considered among the most effective fourth-generation combat aircraft.
At the same time, Sweden plans to transfer 16 Gripen C/D aircraft to Ukraine directly as part of bilateral support, which is expected to significantly enhance the capabilities of the Ukrainian Air Force.
During the meeting, the parties also discussed further strengthening defense cooperation between Ukraine and Sweden, as well as support for the Ukrainian Air Force amid the war with Russia.
The Gripen is a Swedish-made multi-role fighter developed by Saab. Aircraft of this type are capable of performing missions such as intercepting air targets, striking ground targets, and conducting reconnaissance. They are also known for their high maneuverability, modern weapon systems, and relatively low operating costs.
The Swedish government plans to transfer several Gripen fighters to Ukraine. These are Gripen C and Gripen D variants.
As a reminder, Spain will transfer 100 VAMTAC armored vehicles and a batch of artillery ammunition to Ukraine in 2026.
Latvia has decided to transfer additional CVR(T)-type armored combat vehicles to Ukraine.
