Trump suggested possible U.S. intervention in Cuba's affairs
Donald Trump stated that the U.S. could change its approach to Cuba and even intervene in its internal affairs if it would help the local population. He also suggested that his administration could be the one to reset Washington’s policy toward the island after decades of debate. At the same time, he made a series of sharp statements about the state of the country and its future, the AP reports.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that American leaders have discussed the possibility of intervening in Cuba’s affairs for decades but have never taken concrete steps, while he does not rule out that he could be the one to change this approach.
“Other presidents have considered this issue for 50 or 60 years, and they’ve done something. And it looks like I’ll be the one to do it. So I’d be happy to do that,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, commenting on a possible U.S. policy toward Cuba.
According to him, Washington could open the country to Cuban Americans so they can return and help improve the situation on the island. At the same time, Trump described Cuba as a country with serious economic problems, highlighting the lack of resources and the difficult humanitarian situation.
“They have no electricity. They have no money. They really have nothing,” he said, adding, “We will help them.” His remarks came amid discussions in the U.S. regarding possible changes in foreign policy in the Caribbean region, as well as following reports of a military presence in the area, which Trump left without specific explanation.
At the same time, journalists note that the president’s rhetoric regarding Cuba is shifting: just the day before, he hinted at no plans for escalation, but the very next day he allowed for more active intervention.
As a reminder, Cuba has restored its power grid following a massive blackout.
