Ukraine extradited a soldier to Lithuania for the first time since 2022: details
At the end of October, Ukraine extradited a Russian prisoner suspected of torturing a Lithuanian volunteer to Lithuania. He was identified as Margen Gadzhimagomedov, a soldier from the 177th Separate Marine Regiment of the Caspian Flotilla of the Russian Federation.
The Security Service of Ukraine reported the extradition.
According to the Security Service of Ukraine, Gadzhimagomedov served as an inspector in the military police of the 177th Separate Marine Regiment. Investigators say he was involved in torturing Ukrainian prisoners at a detention facility set up by Russian occupation forces on the grounds of the Melitopol airfield. Among the victims was a Lithuanian volunteer who had been assisting Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
The Russian soldier was captured in August 2024 during fighting near the village of Robotyne.
Based on materials provided by the Security Service of Ukraine and international partners, the Vilnius City Court has recognized Gadzhimagomedov as a suspect in violating the Geneva Conventions and the laws and customs of war, in accordance with Articles 100 and 103 (Part 1) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Lithuania.
At the request of the Lithuanian Prosecutor General’s Office, Ukraine extradited the suspect at the end of October to face justice. In Lithuania, he faces between 10 years and life imprisonment. Initial reports did not disclose his name.
The Security Service of Ukraine emphasized that this is the first case since the start of the full-scale war in which Ukraine has extradited a captured Russian serviceman to another country.
