Iran's Supreme Leader has banned the export of enriched uranium – Reuters
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has issued an official directive prohibiting the export of uranium reserves enriched to near-weapons-grade levels. This decision significantly hardens Tehran’s stance on one of the key U.S. demands in the current peace talks and substantially complicates the process of ending hostilities.
This was reported by Reuters.
Senior officials of the Iranian regime are convinced that shipping these nuclear materials out of the country would make Iran far more vulnerable to future military strikes by the U.S. and Israel. There are also serious suspicions in Iran that the current pause in hostilities is merely a tactical ploy by Washington to create a false sense of security before resuming airstrikes.
Although the parties to the negotiation process have managed to somewhat reduce overall tensions, deep differences remain between them regarding the fate of Iran’s accumulated uranium stockpiles and Tehran’s demand for official recognition of its right to continue enrichment. Before the war began, Iran had shown a willingness to voluntarily remove half of its stockpile of uranium enriched to 60 percent, but the leadership’s position has completely shifted following repeated threats by U.S. President Donald Trump to launch new strikes. Israeli officials note that Trump had previously assured Israel that highly enriched uranium would be removed from Iran, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not consider the war over until this condition is met. Meanwhile, the Iranian side claims there are alternative solutions to the problem, such as diluting existing fuel stocks under the direct supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency; however, in the event of a direct attack, Tehran promises a devastating response.
