Tesla to officially unveil Semi trucks at Nevada plant — MyJoyOnline

Tesla plans to officially unveil its Semi electric trucks during the opening of its plant in Sparks, Nevada, United States. The company announced the event on its website and social media nearly nine years after the model was first presented.

Development lasted nearly nine years

As MyJoyOnline reports, citing Reuters, Tesla first unveiled the Semi in 2017. The truck was developed for long-haul transportation, with a claimed range of up to 500 miles, or about 805 kilometers. The company initially expected to begin production in 2019.

The first tractor unit rolled off a high-volume production line in April. Tesla had previously projected the start of mass production this year, but stated in its July letter to shareholders that Semi production would begin in 2026.

Orders and production plans

Tesla began limited deliveries of the Semi to U.S. customers, including PepsiCo, at the end of 2022. The article notes that delays, increased competition, and changes in U.S. electric vehicle policy have raised concerns about demand for such vehicles.

At the same time, this week a coalition of major freight owners, including Microsoft and PepsiCo, ordered 2,500 Semi tractor units, nonprofit organization Catalyst Mobility said. It estimates that this is nearly twice the current fleet of Class 8 electric trucks in the United States.

Last month, Swedish freight technology company Einride AB announced an agreement to add 500 tractor units to its fleet. Tesla has said it is preparing its Nevada plant for annual capacity of up to 50,000 vehicles. Investors and company supporters expect details on production ramp-up, pricing, and major Semi customers.
