Explosions were heard in Kyiv—air defense systems are active
On the evening of October 6, Kyiv and the surrounding region came under threat of an attack by strike drones. Explosions were heard in the capital, and air defense forces are engaging aerial targets. Residents are urged to remain in shelters until the air raid alert ends.
On the evening of October 6, an air raid alert was declared in Kyiv due to the threat of attack drones. The Ukrainian Air Force warned of the danger to the capital and urged people not to ignore the alert. Explosions can be heard in various districts of Kyiv and the surrounding region. Preliminary reports suggest the sounds may be related to Ukrainian air defense operations targeting enemy targets.
Local residents are urged not to go outside and to seek shelter. If it is not possible to take shelter, people should follow the “two-walls rule” and stay away from windows. The airstrike is ongoing, so the situation may change. It is too early to speak of the exact consequences of the strike.
The drones were heading toward the capital
According to preliminary data from monitoring channels, one group of drones was moving near the Kyiv Reservoir in the direction of Vyshhorod and Kyiv. Information about specific routes and the number of aerial targets may change during the attack. That is why official statements from the Air Force and local authorities remain the primary source of information.
The Air Force regularly reminds the public that during an air attack, photos or videos of Ukrainian air defense operations must not be published. Such footage could help the Russian military identify the locations and directions of Ukrainian defense operations.
What Is Known About the Consequences
As of the time of publication, there is no operational information regarding fatalities or injuries resulting from the evening attack. Likewise, there is no confirmed data on damage to specific buildings or facilities in Kyiv.
Information may become available once air defense forces and emergency services have completed their operations. If debris falls to the ground, rescue workers and law enforcement must inspect the scene and assess the extent of the damage. Residents of the capital should not leave their shelters immediately after the first explosions. If the air raid alert is still in effect, the danger has not passed.
Ukraine is under attack by various types of drones
The attack on Kyiv is taking place amid yet another massive wave of Russian drone strikes on Ukraine. According to the Air Force, on the night of October 5–6, Russia launched 137 attack drones of various types. Among them were 49 jet-powered drones. As of 8:00 a.m., Ukrainian air defense forces had shot down or neutralized 114 enemy drones. Hits were recorded at 17 locations, and debris from downed drones fell at four additional sites.
Russia has recently been actively using various types of drones, particularly jet-powered models. As a result, air attacks can last longer, and drone routes can change mid-flight.
Kyiv had already come under attack earlier that day
On October 6, the capital was already targeted by a Russian attack. In the morning, in the Obolon district, the roof of an educational institution caught fire after drone debris fell on it. Rescue workers extinguished the fire; no reports of casualties were received. An air raid alert was declared in Kyiv at that time due to the threat of Russian drones. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene after the debris fell.
This new evening attack means the threat to the capital remains. Therefore, residents of Kyiv and the surrounding region should follow official announcements and not ignore air raid alerts.
During an attack, do not post videos of drones in flight, air defense operations, the locations where aerial targets have fallen, or the movement of military equipment. If you spot debris, do not approach it and notify emergency services. And most importantly—stay in shelter until the air raid alert is officially lifted.
