Kyiv has changed its air raid alert system
A new air threat alert system went into effect in Kyiv on September 6. Now, city residents will receive notifications not only about the existence of a threat but also about its type—drone, missile, or combined.
Starting at 6:00 a.m. on September 6, 2026, Kyiv introduced a differentiated air threat alert system. Now, the alert will immediately indicate exactly what kind of threat the capital is facing. This should help residents understand the situation more quickly during an air raid alert. The system has two threat levels—yellow and red.
What Does the Yellow Level Mean?
The yellow level means “Drone Threat.” Such a notification indicates that a threat related to drones has been detected in Kyiv.
If the situation changes, the previous alert is replaced by a new one. This means residents do not need to wait for a separate signal confirming the cancellation of the previous threat before a new alert is issued.
What does the red level mean?
The red level will be used for larger-scale or more dangerous threats. In such cases, residents may receive one of three alerts:
- “Massive drone threat”;
- “Missile threat”;
- “Missile and drone threat.”
Thus, the alert will now make it clear not only that there is a danger in the city, but also what exactly it is related to. For example, if people initially received a “Drone threat” alert and it later changed to “Missile threat,” this means that a missile threat has now become the immediate danger facing the city.
A separate “All Clear” alert will not be issued between such messages.
When “All Clear” Sounds
The “All Clear” alert means that, at this moment, none of the listed aerial threats have been detected in Kyiv. In other words, if “All Clear” is broadcast after a drone threat alert, it means there is currently no active drone, missile, or combined missile-drone threat to the city. At the same time, each new alert reflects the exact situation as it stands at the moment it appears.
Where the system is already operational
The differentiated alert system has already been implemented throughout nearly all of Kyiv. Currently, the system is operational in all districts of the capital except Pecherskyi. In the Holosiivskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts, the new system is only partially operational. The reason is technical limitations in certain areas, where it is not yet possible to categorize alerts by threat type.
Therefore, the alert procedure there remains the same as before. If any air threat arises, residents hear the standard siren signal. There is currently no separate audible differentiation by threat type in those areas. Additionally, a separate “All Clear” signal will not be sounded in these districts.
How the system will work when the threat changes
One of the main features of the new system is the automatic replacement of the previous alert. If the type of threat changes, residents receive a new alert reflecting the current situation. For example, a “Drone Threat” is initially announced in Kyiv. If a missile threat subsequently arises, the new alert will be “Missile Threat.”
However, no “All Clear” will be announced between the two alerts. This is to avoid creating the false impression that the danger has completely passed. In other words, residents should rely on the most recent alert they received. The new system is intended to make alerts clearer for Kyiv residents. People will be able to determine more quickly exactly what threat the city is currently facing.
At the same time, in areas where it is technically impossible to fully implement the new system, the familiar siren format will remain in place for now. The Kyiv City State Administration emphasizes that during any air threat, residents must respond to the signal and move to a safe place. Differentiating alerts helps people better understand the nature of the danger, but does not eliminate the need to follow safety rules. This was reported by the Kyiv City State Administration.
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has adopted a series of decisions to adapt the operations of the government, businesses, and infrastructure to the new tactics of Russian air attacks. In particular, the government recommends ensuring the full operation of the Kyiv Metro during a yellow alert and, if necessary, increasing the number of surface public transportation options so that citizens can reach their workplaces, medical facilities, and metro stations.
