Turn It Up! online auction to feature works by David Byrne and Joan Baez — Rolling Stone

In the United States, the New York charity Housing Works is holding the Turn It Up! online auction, featuring works by David Byrne and Joan Baez, as well as signed memorabilia from Ringo Starr and Def Leppard’s Rick Allen. Proceeds from the auction will support the organization’s work to provide people living with HIV/AIDS with quality housing, medical care, HIV prevention and treatment, Rolling Stone reports.

Lots from musicians and photographers

Among the lots are a baseball by The National’s Matt Berninger featuring handwritten song lyrics and decorative elements, a signed print by Ani DiFranco, and a vintage concert poster for a performance by Patti Smith and Television at Max’s Kansas City. The poster was donated to the auction by Richard Hell.

Works by Kevin Barnes of Of Montreal and Eric Nally of Foxy Shazam are also up for auction, along with one of Bob Gruen’s famous photographs depicting John Lennon near the Statue of Liberty. Bidding is set to end on Thursday, October 1, at 10 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time.

Second annual auction

This is the second annual Turn It Up! auction. The first event, conceived by music publicist Melissa Nastasi, raised more than $25,000 for Housing Works. Patti Smith, Eddie Vedder and Paul McCartney were among those who donated items at the time.

Music journalist Alan Light, who has served on the board of the Housing Works bookstore in SoHo for more than 20 years, said it has hosted hundreds of concerts featuring John Mellencamp, Björk, John Mayer and Chrissie Hynde. According to him, the bookstore also served as the filming location for the final scene of Taylor Swift’s All Too Well video, while the music community helps Housing Works raise funds for its work.
