The director of *47 Ronin* was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for fraud

Renowned Hollywood director Carl Erik Rinsch, who rose to fame with the film *47 Ronin*, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison

The court found him guilty of large-scale fraud involving funding allocated by the streaming service Netflix for the development of a science fiction series.

According to the prosecution, Netflix had invested a total of about $55 million in the director’s project and later provided an additional $11 million, ostensibly to complete production.

However, instead of using the funds to produce the series, which had the working title “White Horse,” Rinsch transferred the money to his own bank account.

The investigation found that the director spent a significant portion of the money on personal expenses and risky investments.

In particular, he spent the money on cryptocurrency, luxury Rolls-Royce cars, high-end furniture, and other luxury items. Just a few months after receiving the funding, Rinsch lost about half of the amount due to unsuccessful financial transactions.

During the trial in New York, Netflix executives testified that the company had expected a completed season of the series, but the director never fulfilled the terms of the agreement.

Karl Erik Rinsch himself attempted to defend himself in court, claiming that the funds were intended to support production during the pandemic and that the situation had allegedly been “misunderstood.”

According to The New York Times, those close to the director noted his extremely erratic behavior after he began working with Netflix.

Colleagues recalled that Rinsch put forward strange theories, including claims about his own ability to predict natural disasters and his knowledge of the “secret mechanism of transmission” of the coronavirus.

Although the director faced up to 90 years in prison on the combined charges of fraud and money laundering, the court imposed a significantly lighter sentence.

In addition to two and a half years in prison, Karl Erik Rinsch will be subject to three years of probation after his release and is required to reimburse the confiscated $11 million.
