Princess Diana’s revenge dress to be auctioned in New York

Princess Diana’s black silk dress, known as the “revenge dress,” will be offered at a Sotheby’s auction in New York, United States, on December 9. It has been preliminarily estimated at $150,000–$300,000, Dawn reports. The dress was last sold nearly three decades ago.

An outfit by Christina Stambolian

The off-the-shoulder silk dress was created by designer Christina Stambolian. It was considered too daring for a member of the British royal family carrying out official duties, so Diana owned it for several years before appearing in it in public.

In 1994, the princess wore the dress to a Vanity Fair event on the same evening that her husband, then-Prince Charles, publicly admitted to an affair. The outfit subsequently became known as the “revenge dress.”

Auction and exhibitions

The dress will be the leading lot at a standalone Sotheby’s evening fashion auction in New York. According to the auction house, it remains one of the most recognizable fashion looks of the 20th century.

Sotheby’s also noted that the expression revenge dressing has entered the modern fashion lexicon as a name for clothing chosen to demonstrate confidence and independence. Before New York, the dress will be displayed in London, Hong Kong and Geneva, Vogue reports.
