Tinashe, MNEK and Adéla sing about aspirations for pop stardom — Rolling Stone
In New York, United States, British singer, songwriter and producer MNEK spoke about a change in his attitude toward pop stardom after the release of his second album, Bulldozer. The musician believes that contemporary performers are increasingly speaking directly in songs about their own ambitions, their desire for a large audience and a place in pop culture, Rolling Stone reports.
After his debut album Language, released eight years ago, MNEK said he took criticism and doubts about his own chances of success painfully. He now calls the desire to be a pop star a conscious action rather than a label that others should define. In tracks from Bulldozer, the musician writes about self-confidence, the right to take up space in the music industry and confronting its gatekeepers.
Tinashe’s ambitions
American singer Tinashe also placed the theme of career aspirations at the center of her eighth studio album, Popstar. The performer has worked in music for more than 10 years: her singles “2 On” and “Nasty” were released 10 years apart. In songs from the new release, she addresses the doubts of those who do not consider her a pop star, as well as the feeling of waiting for recognition.

MNEK called Tinashe a pop star, emphasizing that she combines dance music, R&B and electronic music in her work. In his view, the concept of a pop star is no longer limited to a specific genre: it is defined by the desire to perform before large audiences, be a recognizable artist and take the stage.
The experience of Adéla and Zara Larsson
Slovak singer Adéla also speaks on her debut album Prima about the desire to achieve success in pop music and about relationships with industry representatives. Her song “Ain’t In LA” made the artist the first representative of Slovakia on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In the track “Therapy,” she describes meetings with people who, she says, have influence over her future but do not understand her creative plans.
MNEK also mentioned Swedish singer Zara Larsson, with whom he worked as a songwriter and producer on her fifth album, Midnight Sun. He called the track “The Ambition” a commentary on her position in pop music and her desire to take first place.
