Documentary about Diesel founder using AI shown in Venice
The Venice Film Festival in Italy premiered Be Brave, a documentary about Renzo Rosso, the founder of the fashion brand Diesel. The film, directed by Francesco Carrozzini, is being screened out of competition in the Venice Open section, Channel NewsAsia reports, citing Reuters.
Archival materials and AI
The film combines real interviews and archival materials with video generated using artificial intelligence. The technology was used to recreate periods of Rosso's life for which no video footage has survived, including episodes from his childhood.
Rosso said he was moved to see himself as a child speaking on screen. According to Carrozzini, artificial intelligence was used throughout the film, including in episodes where the older Rosso apparently appears in the frame. The director said that not a single shot with Renzo Rosso was filmed for this documentary.

Debate over the role of technology
Producer Lorenzo Mieli acknowledged concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence on creativity and jobs in the entertainment industry. In his view, the technology needs to be regulated and controlled, its exploitation and the disappearance of professions need to be prevented, but the industry must also understand it well. He expressed hope that AI would eventually become another artistic tool.
Rosso, who described himself as a technology enthusiast, supported the idea of using artificial intelligence in the film. He also rejected suggestions that the technology could replace designers and artists, stressing that people remain decisive for creativity.
