Punjab Assembly Speaker Khan alleges corruption at Lesco — Dawn

In Chunian, Pakistan, Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Ahmed Khan accused the Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) of alleged corrupt practices and abuses against consumers. He made the statement at a meeting in the Islampura area of Allahabad town, Dawn reports.

Dispute after Lesco raid

Earlier, a complaint was registered against six residents of the area over the beating of a Lesco employee during a raid against defaulters and electricity thieves. The company subsequently disconnected electricity supply to the homes of five people named in the complaint.

Khan claims that the injured Lesco employee received 150,000 Pakistani rupees from one of the residents named in the complaint for clearing high-voltage wires in front of his house. According to the speaker, the employee was reluctant to carry out this work.

Khan also stated that a subsequent police investigation found the FIR to be false. He claims that the accused were not present at the scene of the incident, allegedly confirmed by video recordings provided by Lesco and the residents themselves. The speaker also stated that the company's management supported the employee, whom he called corrupt.

Complaints about the company's work

According to Khan, there is a growing number of complaints about extortion of money under the pretext of transformer repairs, inflated bills, delays in replacing faulty meters, and other violations in billing.

He also accused Lesco employees of demanding large bribes for clearing overhead high-voltage lines. Khan claims that such lines led to deaths of people and livestock and damage to property, while employees at various levels of the company, from line workers to management, were allegedly involved in corruption and the exploitation of consumers.

The speaker criticized statements by the current authorities, including PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, about ending electricity outages. According to him, residents continue to face outages lasting up to 18 hours.
