China launches tallest wind turbine with steel-concrete tower — ECNS

In Xinji, Hebei Province, China, a wind turbine with the world’s tallest steel-concrete tower has begun commercial operation. The installation’s hub height is 204 meters, approximately equivalent to the height of a 70-story residential building. ECNS reports on the launch, citing China Huadian Corp.

Height and design

The increased height makes it possible to harness stronger and more stable winds at higher levels. According to ECNS, this could make wind power generation possible in areas where the average wind speed is below 4.5 meters per second.

The turbine uses a steel-concrete tower system developed in China and designed to reduce the risk of structural resonance. The modular design allows the tower to be erected in separate sections and could become a model for wind power projects in flat areas with weak winds.

Expected output

Compared with turbines of the same scale on 160-meter towers, the new installation is expected to operate for about 220 additional hours per year. Annual electricity generation is estimated to increase by 6%.

The turbine is part of a cluster of wind power projects in Xinji. Once the cluster is fully commissioned, it is expected to generate about 2.065 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, save approximately 692,500 tonnes of standard coal, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 1.7 million tonnes per year.
