Do Kwon insists on a five-year prison term as a sufficient sanction

Terraform Labs co-founder Do Kwon has asked a US court to limit his sentence to five years, arguing that a longer sentence would be excessive given the trials and tribulations he has already endured. In his plea filed on Wednesday, he noted that he had already spent almost three years behind bars, most of them in harsh conditions in Montenegro. Under the agreement with U.S. prosecutors, they agreed not to seek a sentence of more than 12 years, but Kwon's lawyers believe that any sentence of more than five years is "significantly more than necessary."

Despite a possible leniency in the US, Kwon's legal problems will not end. After his sentencing in the US, he will face a separate case in South Korea, where prosecutors are also accusing him of fraud related to the Terra collapse. Kwon is scheduled to be sentenced on December 11, 2025, in Manhattan, where more details about his punishment will be revealed. This case marks an important moment in the cryptocurrency industry, demonstrating the consequences faced by executives of companies that suffer a market crash.
