The NBU is withdrawing old hryvnia banknotes; some denominations are being phased out of circulation

The National Bank of Ukraine continues to gradually withdraw old-style banknotes from circulation. These include notes in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 hryvnias.

They are being replaced by modern banknotes with an updated design and enhanced security features, according to the Ministry of Finance.

These include the following banknotes:

  • 20 hryvnia—2003 series;
  • 50 hryvnia—2004 model;
  • 100 hryvnia—2005 series;
  • 200 UAH — 2007 series;
  • 500 UAH — 2006 series.

There is no urgent need to exchange old banknotes. They remain a valid form of payment, so they can be used without restriction.

At the same time, banks and retail chains are gradually withdrawing these bills from circulation and are not returning them to cash circulation. Instead, the number of bills from the current generation is gradually increasing.

Therefore, if you happen to have an old banknote in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, or 500 UAH, there is no need to take it to a bank specifically to exchange it—you can use it just like regular money.
