Demand for cash in Ukraine has risen, with nearly 971 billion hryvnias in circulation
During the first half of 2026, the amount of cash in circulation in Ukraine increased by 44.5 billion hryvnias, or 4.8%, reaching 970.8 billion hryvnias as of July 1.
The largest increase was recorded among 1,000-hryvnia banknotes.
The National Bank explained that following the traditional decline in cash supply during the first quarter, demand picked up in the second quarter due to seasonal factors. Currently, there are 2.6 billion banknotes and 15.3 billion coins in circulation, with an average of 64 banknotes and 197 coins per resident.
The NBU also noted that the share of 1,000-hryvnia banknotes by value has already exceeded 55%, which was one of the reasons for introducing a new 2,000-hryvnia banknote, set to enter circulation on September 4, 2026. In addition, the gradual withdrawal of 10-kopeck coins from circulation is ongoing.
