An 82-year-old woman who lives alone and independently pays her bills and manages her investments received a letter from Social Security about an overpayment of approximately $20,000. MarketWatch reports, citing a submission by one of her children to the publication's financial advice column.

Overpayment letter

According to the author of the submission, the woman had received the same monthly payment for years and did not know about the problem. The letter from Social Security came as a surprise to her.

The author noted that tension had arisen between him and his mother in recent months because of his desire to learn more about her finances. According to him, his mother believes he treats her like a child. Previously, she had not asked for financial help from either the author of the submission or his brother.

The submission states that the woman has a pension, Social Security payments, investments, and a house that the author estimated to be worth more than $1 million. Also, according to the author, she gave a neighbor $2,000.

The author explained his concern by saying that he does not want to one day find himself at his mother's hospital bed and be unable to pay a bill due to a lack of information about her funds.
