In Ghana, secured lending reached 31.5 billion cedis — MyJoyOnline

In Ghana, the total value of issued and registered secured lending reached 31.5 billion Ghanaian cedis in the second quarter of 2026. This is 73.4% higher than in the same period of 2025, when the figure stood at 18.2 billion cedis, MyJoyOnline reports, citing the quarterly review of the Bank of Ghana’s Collateral Registry.

Banks’ share in lending

Banks registered secured lending worth 19.9 billion cedis, or 63.1% of the total value of such loans in the second quarter. Year on year, this figure rose by 36.6%, from 14.5 billion cedis. Other lenders accounted for 8.3 billion cedis, representing 26.3% of the total volume.

Compared with the first quarter of 2026, the total value of secured loans increased by 57.5%. Banks increased the corresponding figure by 21.5%, while rural and community banks raised it by 12.2%. At the same time, savings and loans institutions, microfinance organizations, and microcredit institutions recorded a decline.

Foreign and local banks

Foreign-controlled banks dominated the banking sector: they registered loans worth 14.1 billion cedis, or 71.1% of all 19.9 billion cedis registered by banks. This is 19.3% higher than the 11.8 billion cedis recorded in the second quarter of 2025.

Local banks registered loans worth 5.7 billion cedis. Compared with 2.7 billion cedis a year earlier, their volume increased by 112.4%.
