Bitcoin 0.3.19 update adds DoS attack limits and removes 'safe mode'

The Bitcoin developer announced the release of version 0.3.19 on December 13, 2010, introducing new limits to protect against DoS attacks and removing the “safe mode” feature. This update aims to enhance Bitcoin network security, although full resilience is yet to be achieved.

The message indicates the software remains vulnerable to DoS attacks and that the added limits are an initial improvement toward system stability. The “safe mode” was a temporary fix after a bug was found in version 0.3.9 but is no longer considered effective and therefore removed. The -limitfreerelay option remains available as a switch for testing if necessary.

These changes show ongoing developer efforts to improve Bitcoin’s security, with more updates expected to safeguard the network from attacks and failures.
