China to pay interest on digital yuan starting 2026
From January 1, 2026, China will allow banks to pay interest on the digital yuan (CBDC) to encourage its adoption.
This move reflects China's effort to boost the use of its digital currency by making it more attractive to both citizens and businesses. Paying interest could increase the appeal of the digital yuan compared to traditional forms of money.
Such measures are expected to drive wider usage of digital currency in everyday financial transactions and support the growth of cashless payments across the country.
