Mutual alcohol consumption: the key to marriage stability

A study published in the journal Substance Abuse and Rehabilitation indicates that consistency in partner alcohol consumption is an important factor for marriage stability. A group of researchers from the University of Buffalo, led by Jessica A. Kulak, analyzed how drinking habits affect aggression and satisfaction in relationships. They concluded that incompatibility in alcohol consumption and especially abuse by one of the partners can lead to conflicts and, in some cases, domestic violence.

It is important to note that the relationship between alcohol consumption and marital satisfaction is bilateral: relationship dissatisfaction can lead to increased alcohol consumption, and such consumption can lead to a further decline in relationship quality. Differences in the risk of divorce have also been found depending on the combination of alcohol consumption habits in a couple: couples with incompatible habits have a higher risk of divorce.

The study emphasizes that although the total amount of alcohol consumed plays a role in the long-term stability of marriages, it is the fact of consistency in consumption habits that is more important. An increased risk of divorce is observed in cases where one partner consumes alcohol significantly more than the other.
