Intel shares in the US rise more than 13% amid CPU rally — CNBC

In the US, Intel shares rose by more than 13% on September 21 — to about $123 per share. According to CNBC, the company’s stock climbed alongside shares of other central processing unit makers.

CPU makers’ rally

Shares of Advanced Micro Devices gained 9% and approached a market capitalization of $1 trillion. Arm Holdings shares rose by more than 15%, while Qualcomm, which is entering the data center market with an Arm-based processor, saw its stock rise by more than 8%.

Meanwhile, shares of Nvidia and Broadcom, which investors do not view as a direct bet on demand for central processing units, rose more modestly — by 2% and 1%, respectively. Intel and AMD are longtime competitors in the market for x86 instruction set server CPUs, while Arm licenses its architecture to other chip developers.

Focus on agentic AI systems

CNBC suggests that renewed interest in CPU makers’ shares may be linked to attention surrounding Meta’s Muse personal agent application. The service, introduced on September 8, enables the automation of certain tasks, including bookings and email replies, and in recent days has topped Apple’s App Store ranking of free applications.

Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon told CNBC that the spread of agentic systems among a broader audience could intensify CPU shortages and demand. Unlike conventional generative chatbots, which mostly use AI accelerators, agentic systems perform multi-step tasks. Central processing units can be used to plan actions, run code, and access external databases.

Meta shares have risen 18% since the close of trading on September 8, including nearly 9% on September 21. Wells Fargo analysts raised their Meta share price target from $640 to $796 and reiterated their buy rating. At the same time, according to GeekWire, Amazon blocked Muse from accessing its online marketplace, citing a violation of its terms of use.
