Anthropic may cite opposition to the construction of data centers as a risk to its IPO

Anthropic, the developer of the AI model Claude, may cite public opposition to the construction of data centers as one of the risk factors in its initial public offering (IPO) prospectus. CNBC reported this, citing people familiar with the preparations for the IPO.

According to the channel’s sources, Anthropic is holding preliminary meetings with bankers and investors in San Francisco. During these confidential discussions, the company’s CFO, Krishna Rao, is being asked about competition, pressure on margins from open-source models, and the potential consequences of a slowdown in data center construction.

In June, Anthropic confidentially filed documents to go public. CNBC sources note that investors expect the company to be valued at approximately $2 trillion during the offering. In the private market, Anthropic is valued at nearly $1 trillion. The company declined to comment.

Anthropic, like its competitor OpenAI, is pushing infrastructure partners to rapidly scale up capacity to meet the demand for cutting-edge models and new services. Major tech companies are spending hundreds of billions of dollars on developing data centers and purchasing graphics processing units.

At the same time, a Gallup poll released in May showed that seven out of ten Americans oppose the construction of AI data centers in their communities. Nearly half of respondents said they were strongly opposed, while about a quarter supported such construction.

Ahead of the U.S. midterm elections, politicians from both parties are also speaking out against the expansion of data centers. Republican Byron Donalds, who won the Republican Party primary in Florida, proposed imposing restrictions on data centers in the state. On the same day, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, signed an executive order establishing strict standards for the development of such facilities.

Computing power is directly linked to the revenue of artificial intelligence labs. CNBC previously reported that Anthropic’s annual revenue exceeded $65 billion.
