AT&T CEO Stankey urges employees to prepare for meetings — Fortune

AT&T CEO John Stankey said during a joint interview with JPMorgan Chase chief Jamie Dimon that participants in work meetings should arrive prepared and express a well-founded position. Fortune reports that the conversation between the company leaders was organized by LinkedIn.

A position must be based on data

Stankey said that he supports discussions at meetings, but employees should not be mere observers. According to him, one of the principles set out in AT&T’s corporate documents states that people should not come to a meeting without prior preparation.

The head of the telecommunications company stressed that a participant’s position should be based on facts, information and data, rather than being an uninformed opinion. He also suggested that when employees are not ready to speak up or have no constructive proposals, the wrong people may be attending the meeting.

Dimon urged people not to avoid uncomfortable topics

Jamie Dimon shares the approach regarding the necessity and productivity of meetings. In his view, leaders should create an environment in which employees are not afraid to disagree or raise uncomfortable issues. Dimon noted that he is not upset when someone points out a mistake to him, as he seeks to do what is best for clients, the country and the company.

Both leaders also spoke about preparing for meetings using artificial intelligence. Stankey questioned whether reading materials is always the best way to prepare, as dialogue with AI, in his view, makes it possible to process information faster. Dimon said that he uses Gemini or Google for quick searches and detailed study of information before meetings.

Dimon previously stated that he reviews materials before meetings and gives them his full attention. If a meeting is not a productive use of employees’ time, he believes it should be canceled. According to Fortune, JPMorgan shares rose by more than 17% over the past year, while AT&T stock fell by about 12%.
