Samsung SDI to Sell Part of Its Stake in Samsung Display for $3.22 Billion

South Korean battery manufacturer Samsung SDI will sell part of its stake in Samsung Display for 4.45 trillion won, or $3.22 billion. The company plans to allocate the proceeds to investments in future growth areas, according to The Korea Herald.

According to a regulatory filing by Samsung SDI, the company will sell 13.09 million shares to Samsung Display at 340,000 won per share. Samsung Display will purchase these shares as treasury stock. The stake represents approximately 33% of the total number of Samsung Display shares currently held by Samsung SDI.

Currently, Samsung SDI holds 39.86 million shares in the display manufacturer, which is affiliated with Samsung Electronics. Following the transaction, Samsung SDI’s stake in Samsung Display is expected to decrease from 15.2% to 10.2%.

The company noted that the final number of shares and the transaction amount may change during the buyback process. Samsung SDI did not disclose details regarding specific projects that will be financed by the proceeds from the sale.

Samsung SDI continues to invest in next-generation battery technologies and the expansion of production capacity amid intensifying competition in the global battery market. According to industry observers, some of the proceeds may be directed primarily toward Synergy Cells—a battery plant currently under construction in New Carlisle, Indiana.

Synergy Cells was established in 2024 as a joint venture between Samsung SDI and General Motors. Samsung SDI recently agreed to acquire General Motors’ entire stake in this joint venture, which is expected to give the Korean company full control over the enterprise. The Indiana plant is intended to meet growing demand, particularly for energy storage systems and batteries for electric vehicles.
