In the US, Anthropic prepares for an IPO amid calls to slow AI development

In the United States, Claude chatbot developer Anthropic is preparing for a possible initial public offering on Nasdaq. At the same time, the company’s co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei called on the industry to slow the pace of development of advanced artificial intelligence models. As CNBC Top News reports, Anthropic confidentially filed its IPO prospectus in June and could offer shares as early as next month.

Earlier this year, Anthropic was valued at $965 billion, and during the IPO the company may seek a valuation of $2 trillion. CNBC also confirmed that Anthropic selected Nasdaq for a possible listing. Anthropic and OpenAI declined to comment to the outlet.

Safety proposals

In an essay published last weekend, Amodei proposed three steps to curb the pace of improvements in AI model capabilities without losing commercial advantages and US leadership in AI. He advocated involving independent third-party model evaluators, introducing common safety standards for companies developing advanced models, and coordinating democratic countries with authoritarian states to the extent possible.

The initiative was supported by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, which owns Grok developer xAI. Some analysts believe that stricter safety requirements could strengthen the positions of the largest players, as smaller competitors would find it more difficult to cover the costs of evaluating, securing, and protecting advanced models.

Investor expectations

According to CNBC, Anthropic’s annualized revenue reached $65 billion in July — approximately seven times more than a year earlier. The Financial Times, citing informed sources, reported that the company told some shareholders it intends to generate operating profit for the second consecutive quarter in the current period.

Menlo Ventures investor Matt Murphy said he sees no reason to slow growth or postpone the public offering. Meanwhile, PitchBook analyst Harrison Rolfes believes that valuations of model-developing companies may require a discount because of the difficulty of commercializing the technology safely. Anthropic and OpenAI also remain major customers of computing infrastructure and Nvidia graphics processors.
