In the United States, Andy Dunn, co-founder of the menswear brand Bonobos, sold the company to Walmart for $310 million in 2017. This happened about a year after the entrepreneur experienced a manic episode, was hospitalized and arrested in New York, Fortune reports.
Dunn told the publication that he has been diagnosed with bipolar I disorder, which was diagnosed in 1999 while he was studying at Northwestern University. In March 2016, during a manic episode in his own apartment, he injured his head. According to Fortune, when his then-girlfriend Manuela tried to help, Dunn hit her.
After eight police officers arrived, Dunn was taken to the psychiatric ward of Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, where he spent a week. The article also states that after the episode, the entrepreneur began taking medication, attending therapy and paying closer attention to his sleep and daily routine.
Treatment and Bonobos
According to Dunn, it took six months to find a medication regimen that allowed him to feel like himself again. He also said that he has consulted a doctor weekly for ten years and has not missed taking his medication.

Bonobos kept Dunn as chief executive officer until its sale to Walmart. At the time of the deal, the brand's annual sales amounted to about $120 million. Dunn founded Bonobos with Brian Spaly at the age of 28; they invested a total of $60,000 of their own money in producing trousers and initially sold them through presentations and recommendations.
Social app Pie
Dunn later founded the social app Pie, designed to help people find platonic relationships and organize in-person meetings. The company was created in 2020. According to Fortune, Pie is available in all 50 US states and 100 cities, has more than 310,000 users and has raised a total of $24 million in investment.
Dunn called Bonobos a company closely connected to his ego and identity. Regarding Pie, he said that he views the project as a company rather than a reflection of his own personality.
