US home insurance rises to a record nearly $2,500 a year — MarketWatch

In the United States, the average cost of insurance for the owner of a single-family home with a mortgage reached a record $209 per month in June 2026, or nearly $2,500 a year. This is $5 per month more than in 2025, MarketWatch reports, citing Intercontinental Exchange data.

Since the beginning of 2020, property insurance costs in the country have risen by nearly 80%. Intercontinental Exchange has tracked these indicators since December 2013. According to the Consumer Federation of America, homeowners who cannot afford higher insurance premiums may be forced to sell their homes or risk falling behind on mortgage payments.

The largest increase in Greenville

Over the past 12 months, insurance premiums increased the most in Greenville, South Carolina, by nearly 16%. Honolulu follows with a 15% increase, as does Columbia, South Carolina.

Insurers are revising prices in light of the consequences of natural disasters. In the Carolinas, rates include risks associated with Hurricane Helene, which made landfall in September 2024. In Minneapolis and Des Moines, insurers also take into account hail and severe convective storms, which may include thunderstorms with lightning, tornadoes, or destructive winds.

The share of housing costs is rising

In 2026, property insurance accounted for an average of 9.6% of a homeowner's monthly housing costs, compared with 7.2% in 2018. In New Orleans, insurance accounted for 24.3% of the monthly housing payment, compared with 17.9% in Baton Rouge and 17.5% in Oklahoma City.

At the same time, the pace of price increases slowed in Miami: premiums rose by only 1.5% year over year, while insurance's share of the monthly payment fell from 17.4% to 16.2%. The ICE study also found that switching insurers allowed customers to reduce their premiums by an average of 6.6%, while customers who stayed with the same insurer paid 10.4% more. In Miami, those who switched companies reduced costs by an average of 18.5%.
