Zillow and Redfin reach deal to settle FTC antitrust case

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Zillow announced a proposed settlement of an antitrust case concerning the Zillow and Redfin partnership in the rental listings segment. As The Verge reports, the agreement is expected to conclude the review of claims related to the deal the companies entered into in 2025.

Regulator's claims

The FTC alleged that Zillow agreed to pay Redfin to distribute its listings. In return, according to the regulator, Redfin was to end its own advertising contracts and commit not to compete with Zillow for rental listings in apartment buildings.

The regulator believed that such an arrangement limited competition in the rental listings market, leaving renters with fewer options and contributing to higher prices.

Terms of the agreement

The proposed settlement allows Redfin to continue distributing Zillow rental listings without the anticompetitive restrictions contained in the original agreement. At the same time, Redfin must restore its own advertising business in rental listings, which the company wound down as part of the partnership.

FTC Bureau of Competition Director Daniel Guarnera said the agreement gives renters and property management companies a better, faster and more certain outcome than the one the regulator could have achieved after winning in court. The attorneys general of Arizona, Connecticut, New York, Virginia and Washington also joined the proposed settlement.
