Gibraltar becomes first in Europe to license prediction market platform

Gibraltar has become the first European jurisdiction to grant a licence to a prediction market platform — Predict Street Ltd, with its official launch scheduled for April 9. This marks a significant step as such platforms previously operated in a regulatory grey area, and this could shift the legal framework for the sector.

Predict Street Ltd claims to be the "official partner of the 2026 FIFA World Cup prediction markets" and promises early access to tickets for users. However, there is currently no official confirmation from FIFA, and the company’s website is inaccessible in several jurisdictions.

Previously, Malta had also expressed intentions to regulate similar platforms. At present, major prediction market services have been blocked in several countries including Ukraine, France, the Netherlands, and Germany due to regulatory issues.

The issuance of the first licence in Gibraltar could set a precedent, changing the rules of the game by allowing greater legitimacy and oversight of prediction market platforms.

It is expected that new regulation will improve transparency and user safety, while fostering expansion of prediction markets across Europe.
