Illegal gambling market in Germany smaller than expected
The German gambling regulator GGL revealed in a new study that 77.03% of players use legal services, challenging concerns about the dominance of the shadow market in the country.
According to the research, about 75% of online gamblers prefer licensed operators. Additionally, around 36% of Germans aged 16 to 70 participated in gambling over the past year, with this figure remaining stable.
It was found that 2.2% of the population show signs of gambling addiction, and another 5.5% are at risk. The most problematic gambling types are online slots and sports betting, while lotteries present a lower risk.
GGL is the German gambling regulatory authority overseeing the legality and safety of gambling services in Germany, aiming to protect players and promote responsible gaming.
These findings indicate that the legal gambling market in Germany is more developed and regulated than previously assumed, which is critical for future regulatory policies and consumer protection.
Experts predict that supporting licensed operators and strengthening measures against illegal gambling will reduce addiction risks and improve the market structure.
