Ethiopia’s private bank integrates national lottery into Coopay E-birr mobile wallet
The Cooperative Bank of Oromia has integrated a digital lottery service into its Coopay E-birr mobile application in partnership with the Ethiopian National Lottery Service and TamCom Software Solutions. The initiative forms part of Ethiopia’s broader digital transformation strategy aimed at 2030.
Coopay E-birr is currently the third-largest mobile wallet in Ethiopia, serving more than 21 million users. The platform has processed transactions totaling over $30.65 billion, reflecting the rapid growth of digital financial services in the country.
The addition of a lottery service directly within the mobile wallet is expected to expand the platform’s functionality and increase user engagement. It may also support the adoption of cashless payments and digital financial tools.
Experts suggest that such integrations can improve transparency in financial operations while expanding access to financial services for citizens, contributing to the continued development of Ethiopia’s digital economy.
