New York regulator proposes limits on AI use in sports betting
The New York state regulator has introduced new rules aiming to restrict the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in sportsbook operations while strengthening player protection requirements. This initiative, developed by the Gaming Commission under the directive of Governor Kathy Hochul, marks a significant step toward regulating the gambling industry.
In particular, the proposal seeks to ban AI applications for crafting personalized bonuses and betting recommendations, alongside enhancing customer identification processes, including biometric verification via camera or fingerprint. Operators may also be required to implement early warning systems for problem gambling signs, such as large deposits, frequent withdrawal cancellations, or a sudden increase in account activity.
Additionally, the regulations call for appointing a responsible officer to oversee compliance with responsible gaming principles. The draft regulation is currently out for public consultation until May 15, 2026, after which the regulator will finalize its decisions.
This move aims to increase transparency and safety in the gambling sector, mitigating risks that new technologies might pose to players.
The introduction of these rules could set a precedent for other states and countries looking to regulate AI integration in gambling.
