The Peninsula New York hotel in New York City, United States, at Fifth Avenue and 55th Street in Midtown Manhattan, retained historical elements during its 2024 renovation. The building at 700 Fifth Avenue was constructed in 1905 in the Beaux-Arts style and originally housed the Gotham Hotel.
As The National reports, during a tour of the hotel, the review’s author was told that in 1988 Sir Michael Kadoorie, chairman of The Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels, signed a cheque on site to purchase the property. The company manages the Peninsula Hotel Group. The renovation preserved, among other features, the grand entrance staircase and the Gotham Lounge on the mezzanine level.
Rooms and interiors
The hotel has 219 rooms and suites, including 54 suites. The review’s author stayed in a 98-square-metre Premier Deluxe Suite. It has a separate living room with dining and writing desks, a bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe, and a bathroom with a deep bathtub by a window overlooking Fifth Avenue.
A chandelier with 14,000 crystals is installed in the lobby. It also displays a rotating collection of works by New York artists and pieces that move between Peninsula hotels. During the author’s visit, works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Dan Asher, Servane Mary and Keith Haring were on display.

Restaurant and wellness services
The main restaurant, Clement, serves breakfast, lunch and weekend brunch. Breakfast is offered à la carte, without a buffet: blueberry pancakes cost $32, lobster scramble costs $49, and a truffle omelette costs $62.
The rooftop Pen Top bar opens at 5 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday. Other hotel services include an indoor pool on the 22nd floor, a gym with Peloton bikes, a yoga studio, and a hair and nail salon. The spa, for guests aged 18 and over, has a sauna, steam room, ice shower, ice fountain and relaxation area.
The published rate for a Premier Deluxe Suite starts at $5,195 per night, while a Superior room starts at $895. The review was conducted at the hotel’s invitation.
