Dan Ariely becomes number three on Israel’s Pirate Party list

Israel’s Pirate Party submitted a list of 25 candidates for the elections to the 26th Knesset, scheduled for October, to the Central Elections Committee. Third place on the list was taken by Israeli-American behavioral economist and bestselling author Dan Ariely, The Jerusalem Post reports.

Ariely appeared at the Knesset wearing a pirate hat, continuing the party’s tradition. Asked by the Israeli outlet Kipa about his decision to join the political force, he replied: “Politics is fun.”

The Pirate Party was founded in 2012. It first took part in Knesset elections in 2013 and received just over 2,000 votes at the time — its best result to date. The party has never come close to clearing the electoral threshold.

Direct citizen participation

The party advocates using technology that would allow Israeli citizens to play a more direct role in government decision-making. Its representative Daniel Felber said before submitting the list that Israel’s democracy should allow citizens to influence decisions throughout the Knesset’s entire term, rather than only on voting day.
