US National Intelligence chief Clayton calls superintelligence a national security issue — CNBC

In the United States, Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton said that superintelligence is a matter of national security. In an interview with CNBC, he also opposed a pause in the development of artificial intelligence models by American companies.

AI development without a pause

Clayton made the statement the day after US President Donald Trump met with the heads of leading technology companies at the White House. The participants included the heads of Anthropic and OpenAI.

According to Clayton, the meeting participants recognized the importance of Americans' safety during the development of AI technologies. He said that the United States should not abandon further model development while allowing other countries to develop and deploy them.

At the same time, the heads of Anthropic and OpenAI called for slowing the development of the technology because of the risks associated with it.

Industry regulation

After the White House meeting, Trump said that company leaders had agreed to self-regulate the industry and be responsible for the safe development of technologies. Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren called this approach a recipe for disaster.

In response, Clayton said that the Federal Trade Commission and the US Department of Justice, rather than the civil litigation system, should protect Americans in this area. He twice did not directly answer whether he would agree to take on the additional position of AI coordinator if Trump offered it to him. Axios reported that Trump told the outlet that Clayton would be a good candidate for the role.
