Mátyás appointed a relative as justice minister in Hungary’s new government — Politico
Péter Magyar, leader of the Tisa Party and Hungary’s future prime minister, announced the appointment of his sister’s husband as justice minister. Amid criticism, he stated that his sister would step down from her position as a judge.
This information was reported by Politico.
Márton Melletei-Bárna, whom Magyar selected, is married to Magyar’s sister, Anna Ilona Melletei-Bárna. According to the Tisa leader, he is the right person for the job, as his professional competence as a lawyer is “undisputed.”
“I’ve known him for a long time. My decision was based on his qualifications and his commitment to the rule of law,” he said.
Mátyás says the decision was “not a political calculation, but an answer to the question: ‘Who can best represent the program of a functional and humane Hungary with the greatest competence, moral conviction, and unwavering integrity?’”
“Fidesz has destroyed the rule of law; legal certainty and equality before the law no longer exist in Hungary. To rectify all this, I sought a person capable of carrying out this immense, historic task, and whose professional competence is beyond doubt,” Melletey-Barna Magyar described.
At the same time, he acknowledged that this presented him with a “serious dilemma,” adding that concerns about family ties within the government are “understandable.” Therefore, Mádor announced, his sister would make “yet another sacrifice” and step down from her position as a judge “to avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest.”
