Diane Parry wins her first WTA singles title in Monterrey

French tennis player Diane Parry defeated Belgium’s Elise Mertens in the Monterrey Open final in Mexico to win the first WTA singles title of her career. In the decisive match of the WTA 500 tournament, the 23-year-old Parry beat second-seeded Mertens 6:4, 0:6, 6:3.

Course of the final match

According to Channel NewsAsia, Parry took a 4:1 lead in the first set, but Mertens levelled the score. The French player won the next game, then broke serve and closed out the set 6:4.

Mertens dominated the second set: the Belgian tennis player won six consecutive games and broke her opponent’s serve three times. At 0:5, Parry took a medical timeout before returning to the court.

Decisive set and US Open

In the third set, Parry again seized the initiative and moved ahead 5:1. Mertens narrowed the gap by winning two games in a row, but the French player served out the match and closed the set 6:3. The final lasted just over two and a half hours.

At the US Open, Parry will play Switzerland’s Viktoria Golubic on Monday.
